Turkish history and geography
Istanbul is a large cosmopolitan city which ‘bridges’ the East and West and attracts growing tourist figures annually. The country offers lovely mountain, plain and desert scenery and some beautiful, picture book white sandy beaches.
Turkish history has been shaped by the presence of the Hittites, the Greeks, the Romans, the Byzantines, the Seluks and the Armenians. Plus it was once part of the famous Ottoman Empire.
The charismatic leader, Mustafa Kemal Atatürk founded modern Turkey in 1923. Initially recognised for his outstanding military career, Atatürk realised important, progressive reforms. Today, Turkey is currently applying for EU membership which is underpinned by a ‘Westernisation’ process taking place throughout the country.
So where does Turkey sit within the world? It borders:
- the Black Sea to the north
- Georgia and Armenia to the north east
- Iran to the east
- Iraq and Syria to the southeast
- Greece and Bulgaria to the northwest.
The Mediterranean Sea lies to the south and the Aegean Sea to the west.
